Oh, The Places You'll Go - Teacher Thank You Note

Last year, my daughter graduated from kindergarten, so being the party mom I am, I signed up to help with our completely over-the-top Dr. Seuss inspired graduation party.  I shared my creative inspiration, the invitations, food ideas, tutorials for decorations and finally, some lousy snap-shots from the big event itself.  I don't know how you could have possibly missed all of those posts, but if you did, click those links to view the madness.  ;)

In the very last post, I shared a photo of the thank you card I designed for the teachers and it's gotten such a warm response that I've decided the post a slightly-updated PDF version for your printing pleasure...figured you wouldn't want another kid's school mentioned in your card, so I swapped out the "BBP" for a more generic "our school days" that anyone can use.... 

The original version was two layers.  The colorful swirls were printed on transparency film and the text was printed on card stock for a fun peek-a-boo effect...similar to the invitations. I used some colorful string to tie the two pieces together. Here is the PDF for that version: Download Thank You Cards - 2-Layer

NOTE: The transparency will print upside down, but when you fold it over the cardstock, it will align correctly

For both versions, print on standard 8.5 x 11" film or cardstock and then simply fold in half and trim your margins.  (NOTE: For some reason, when I download the PDF from this post it has an odd white margin along the left side and bottom edge...if anyone knows how to correct that, please let me know.  The file looks fine on my computer when I open it from my desktop.) 

That's all there is to it!  I hope you are able to put these to good use.

Easy St. Patrick's Day Bento

It's always fun to surprise my daughter with a fun lunch for special occassions.  This St. Patrick's Day bento is done in our Plant Box and was super simple to put together. I stuck to a green and orange "Irish" color scheme and used a shamrock shaped cookie cutter to make some fun shapes.

Here's what I packed going clockwise from the top left:

• shamrock pita bread (1 round will yield a few shamrocks)
• frozen edamame (thaws by lunch)
• green pepper rings (naturally shamrock shaped - score!)
• shamrock cheddar cheese (just cut thick slices and cut with your cookie cutter)
• fresh kiwi
• orange and green gummy worms for dessert

Pinch Proof DIY St. Patrick's Day Dress and Headband

No one wants to get pinched on St. Patrick's Day for not wearing green, right?  But what's a girl to do if she never wears green?  The only green thing my daughter had to wear last year was a pair of green rubber boots.  Problem was, the kids weren't allowed to wear shoes in the classroom, so my daughter literally had nothing green to wear to school.  I didn't really want to spend a lot on a green outfit that she'd likely never wear again, so what now?  Mmmm....you guessed it...hit the thrift store and pop some tags!  (Like how I slipped in that Macklemore reference?  I featured him on my blog months ago you know...before he blew up...just sayin'.  Lucky you read this blog, so you can keep up on this stuff.)

So, back to the project.  Here's what I did.  This is so stinkin' easy you can practically finish it while your child eats breakfast. And the whole project only cost a couple bucks.  At the thrift store, I found this cute green halter/tube top that was long enough to be a dress on my daughter....all it needed were some straps to keep it up.  To make the straps, I used an old ribbon belt...circa 1993 and sourced from my closet, cause I'm THAT fashionable.

To figure out the length of the straps, I had my daughter try the top on while I held the ribbon over her shoulder and cut it.  Then I pinned the pieces in place while she stood there, so I could get the length and placement right on both sides.  When she took it off, I stitched the ribbons in place. Voila!

And here's the bonus...I had plenty of ribbon left, so I was able to make a matching headband.

I just slid the open end over an old headband and cut it off, leaving about 1/2 extra ribbon on each end.  Last step was to hot glue the edges down and add a flower.

How cute is this?

The finishing touch was a necklace her grandmother made for her...I'd say she's safe from pinching now, if not the giggles.  ;)

And if those photos weren't enough cuteness for one blog post, here's our after school donut run...I have to say the green boots were the pièce de résistance of her whole look. 

That little green dress saw way more action after St. Patty's Day than I thought it would, but eventually met it's doom later that summer when it became a fierce scarecrow for our garden...LOL.  (The best part was watching the balloon head slowly shrink and the features become more and more creepy.)  Eventually, some animal had enough and tore that scarecrow to bits. 

So, that's how you put your goofy old ribbon belts to use, set your kid up for St. Patrick's Day and ensure a top-notch wardrobe for your scarecrow.   You got a little more out of this post than you were expecting, didn't ya?  That's ok, you don't have to thank me.  It's how I am.  I'm a giver.  ;)

Handmade Holidays: Wool Ewe Be My Valentine?

It's that time of year again, when I pull out my craft supplies and get busy making Valentines. I make them for my daughter to take to school and for friends and family near and far. This year's design, was inspired by finger knitting.  Strange, but true.  My daughter and many of her schoolmates are really into finger knitting, so I thought it would be fun to incorporate yarn or wool into their Valentines this year.  I did a quick inspiration search online and found a vintage knitting Valentine with the phrase, "Wool you be my Valentine?"  I thought that was pretty cute and my daughter liked it too.  From there, I made the leap to a fuzzy wool sheep and immediately knew I wanted to use some of my felted wool sweaters.  We changed the spelling of "you" to "ewe" and this is what we came up with.

I always enjoy sharing my projecst, so....are EWE ready to make some Valentines?  Here's how to do it...

GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES:

*cardstock

*printer

*felt or fabric cut into approx. 2 x 2 1/2 inch ovals  (I did this freehand...no need to be perfect.  If you are really motivated, you could even try to cut a scalloped edge.)

*scissors

*spray adhesive

*google eyes

*heart punch (optional)

*glue

*glitter (optional)

Felting Tip: I find wool and cashmere sweaters at thrift stores all the time and always snap them up to make felt with.  They usually have holes in them, so I have no qualms about cutting them up to make something new. Felting them at home in your washer keeps them from fraying and makes a nice sturdy material to work with.  Just wash them in hot water and dry on high heat...it may take a few cycles to get them where you want them, but it's easy.

STEP 1: Save the image below to your computer by right clicking and saving.  Print it out on 3.5 x 5" cardstock just like you would a photo.  You may need to adjust your printer's settings to do this.  (I cut down an assortment of 8.5 x 11" sheets I had left over from other projects, but you can also buy pre-cut "4 bar" sized cards from places like Paper Source.  If you would rather print four-to-a-page and cut apart after, here is a PDF file for you... STEP 2: Spread your printed cards out on the table to get them ready for adding the wool sheep bodies.

STEP 3: Lay your ovals face down in a box or on some paper; then spray the backs with spray adhesive. (I used a paper lined pizza box leftover from the previous night's dinner....using a box helps contain the spray, so you don't end up with adhesive all over your floor.) 

STEP 4: Apply your felt ovals to the printed cards. 

STEP 5: Glue on google eyes and punched hearts if you wish. 

I thought they looked pretty cute at this point and could have called it quits, but something was missing. I was feeling a strong urge to add glitter.  So glitter I did...all 45 of 'em! 

KICK IT UP A NOTCH: Pour plain white glue into a shallow dish and pour glitter into a second dish. Dip just the edge of the card into the glue and then into the glitter...repeat for all four sides.  (Be sure to check the back too, so you don't end up with sticky bald spots on the back.)  Set them out somewhere to dry.

And, voila!  The finished product is pretty darn sweet if I do say so myself. 

Now onto the hard part...getting my 6-year old to sign them all...LOL!  So that's the project.  I'm excited to hear what ewe think, so feel free to leave some comments, won't ewe??  XOXO, Cindi

Handmade Hanukkah: Easy Hanukkah Bentos

Welcome to day 4 of my Handmade Hanukkah series!  Today, I'm going to share some lunch box ideas that are sure to bring smiles come lunchtime.  Bento style lunches have gotten really popular recently and are especially fun for kids.  I am constantly amazed by the skill and creativity people put into their little works of food art.  I haven't seen many with a Hanukkah theme though, so I came up with some ideas of my own.  My brother would tell me I need a job...

Let's talk hardware first.  My daughter has a Planet Box lunchbox, which I really like for a number of reasons.  It's easy for my little one to open, there is no packaging waste and it also reminds me to think in terms of the four food groups...most of the time.  You could do this with anything you have though....one big tupperware or several smaller containers would all work...just use what you have.

Now on to the food!  Here's my first attempt....  I will admit, it's a little heavy on the sweets and the protein and veggies are a little lacking, but hey, it's a holiday!  The child will live.  I had an extra Hanukkah donut from our Hanukkah feast the night before.  These came from the Daily Dozen Donut Company in the Pike Place Market. They make them fresh while you watch...so good!  I also used cheddar cheese which I cut into shapes using a small paring knife.  I got a real kick out of the pretzle rod candle, btw...my favorite part.  Homemade applesauce left-over from latkes the night before felt perfectly symbolic and the blackberries were there for color.  In the bottom left compartment is some pear...again, sticking with my blue, white and yellow color scheme.  The center is normally the treat spot, so even though there was already a donut, I used two yogurt covered raisins and two small candies...mostly because I liked how they looked...LOL.  How much of this did my daughter eat?  Everything except the pretzles, the raisins and the blackberries.

My second lunch is a bit more balanced.  I made little candles with mozarella cheese sticks and carrot flames.  There are 9 orange sections, which if you stretch your imagination, kind of look like the lights of a fully lit menorah.  Blue corn chips were there for color, along with the white yogurt covered raisins again.  Two pieces of gelt were the treat of the day.  Ham is rolled and tucked into the last compartment...a lunch box favorite!  In the center square, I made a Jewish star out of yellow bell pepper. 








If you are curious about how to cut shapes in food, it is really quite simple.  For the cheese, I sliced thick pieces with a wire cheese slicer, then free-hand cut shapes with my paring knife.  Cookie cutters are also great for this if you have them.  (Regarding the slicer, it came with my husband...not something I would have bought for myself, but for the purpose of cutting shapes in cheese, it's great.  You can also use a big knife, but the slicer keeps the slice really even.)  For the carrot flames, I cut thick rounds of carrot and then just cut in the points of the flames.  For the bell pepper star, I picked a flat side of the pepper to work with and hand-cut the star like I did for the cheese.  Honestly, it's not hard and it really doesn't take long.  I usually end up eating the scraps that I cut away while I'm making lunch, so nothing goes to waste.

Oh, The Places You'll Go - Party Time!

The time has finally come for the big reveal...I am excited to share some pics from the Oh, The Places You'll Go preschool graduation party that I've been talking about over my past several posts.  Sadly, my phone did not take the best photos, but I think you'll get a sense of the space and how cute the event was.

We started with a very cool space at our local community center.  The room we wanted was booked for our date and time, so we asked about using the downstairs lobby...an industrial chic, open-air space with huge windows, exposed brick and a balcony over-looking the whole room. It was available (and cheaper) than the room we originally wanted, plus it had it access to the outdoors...score!

Here are some of the great details...lots of gorgeous art made by the students...including the streamer wall!  At school, each child made their own section of streamers by taping them to a piece of black paper.  At the party, all we had to do was hang them up side-by-side for a seamless look.  The handprint rainbow had been an ongoing project in the classroom all year, so it was brought to the party and hung behind a food table.  In keeping with the theme, the children also made hot air balloon decorations that featured quotes about their favorite preschool memories.

For the food, we ordered pizzas for the kids and had a potluck for the adults.  The tables weren't much to look at in the end, but it's worth noting the sustainability of the whole thing. I sourced a huge pile of colorful fabric yardage for tablecloths.  Each piece was a thrift store find and is totally reuseable. Even if I simply donated all the fabric back to the Goodwill after the party, it was still cheaper than buying disposable tablecloths and far better for the environment.  All of the plates, napkins and even utensils were compostable and we used mason jars for glasses.

In an effort to minimize waste, the drink table was set up with three huge drink dispensers full of TJ's organic lemonade, iced tea and tap water.  Turned out everyone who brought a drink dispenser had the same one, so it looked very put together.  I believe they are from Costco.  (Excuse the spill in the photo below...one of the drink dispensers was wide open when we started adding water, so it spilled everywhere.  Won't make that mistake again!) We also had a few bottles of sparkling water and some apple juice. 

The striped paper straws were a splurge from HeyYoYo.  The mason jars are mine.  I keep some for when I have parties at my house, some are for my canning projects and whatever I can't use will find good homes with other friends who will happily take a spare box of jars.  NO waste.  :)

We set up a long table for the graduates to eat their dinner...everyone else was able to stand and mingle while they ate.  The drink table was set up just outside the door, so the stickiest spills were contained outside. :)

After the feast, the children participated in the official graduation ceremony, during which I balled my eyes out as I read this little card I had designed for each of the teachers.  I hadn't expected to get so emotional...it's only preschool, afterall.  But then again, it IS preschool, afterall...LOL!  (UPDATE 5/3: I've posted a tutorial and printable PDF for the teacher appreciation cards.)

Dessert was a gorgeous cake made by a friend of a parent...

As the night came to an end, one of the mom's who runs a fitness boot camp set up an obstacle course outside.  It was hilarious to watch the graduates - all hopped up on sugar and adrenaline - racing around and having fun together.

Oh, The Places You'll Go - DIY Decoupaged Globe Centerpiece

This globe was a last minute addition to my projects for the Oh, The Places You'll Go party I helped with for my daughter's preschool graduation. It was totally inspired by artist Wendy Gold who sells amazing decoupaged globes in her Etsy shop, ImagineNations.  As much as I would have loved to support her work, I had a very limited budget and was forced to make do on my own.  One of the moms on the party committe had this extra globe she no longer needed, so I hit it with some of the leftover paint from my cake plates and decoupaged images I had scanned, as well as a few I downloaded from an image search. 

To paint the globe, I took it apart and stuck it on a stick in the yard...like a giant cake pop.  I assumed that I would not be able to see the map images through the paint, but was pleasantly surprised when they were still visible after the first coat.

Cutting out the images took the most time...very fiddly work!  But decoupaging went quickly.  The ink in my images ran a little and gave them an almost hand-painted look that I really liked.  All in all, I thought it turned out really well.  We used it on the cake table and I gave it to the preschool director to keep after the party.

If you like this idea and want to try one on your own, I say go for it!  This is actually a fairly easy project and ImagineNations even has some DIY kits for sale if you don't want to mess with sourcing your own images.

Handmade Holidays: Father's Day T-Shirts

Every year I get all gung-ho for Mother's Day crafts, but for some reason, I start to loose steam by Father's Day.  I'm not really sure why that happens...doesn't really matter...it's just not right!  Dad's deserve crafts too!  This year, I was waaaaay ahead of the game and am just so dang proud of myself. 

I was inspired by this t-shirt I found on Pinterest. It features kid art made by drawing a picture on a t-shirt using a bleach pen.  So awesome!  I absolutely love functional kid art. 

So, even though I can't stand bleach and this technique has already been covered by the blogosphere at large, I will show you what we did and how our shirts turned out.  I was able to score some nice cotton t-shirts for half-off clearance price which made them about $4 each.  (Not that the dads aren't worth more, but I wasn't sure how this would turn out and didn't want to drop a ton of cash on shirts that were possibly destined for the rag bag.)  Little did I know the shirts were huger than HUGE.  Possibly on clearance due to extreme mislabeling...the one below is a small.  Just kidding, it's an XL, but it's a super-sized XL. 

I didn't catch the super-sized issue until we were ready to start, so we went ahead as planned and crossed fingers that these puppies would shrink in the wash later.  (They did not.)  The only other things you need are a bleach pen, some cardboard to put inside the shirt and something to protect your work surface. 

And....here's how we made our shirts:

STEP 1: Unfold your shirt and stuff a piece of cardboard inside it to keep the bleach from soaking through to the back.  I ended up using a box, so that it would be easier for my 5-year-old to visualize her drawing space...didn't want the design to be too big or off-center.  It also helped a little to keep the fabric taught while she was drawing.

Step 2: Draw a picture with the bleach pen.  A simple line drawing worked best.  Let the bleach sit for a few minutes to bleach out the image.  You can see the fabric turning red in the photo below.

Step 3: Carefully remove the cardboard from inside the shirt and carry your shirt to the sink...taking care not to get bleach on any other part of the shirt or yourself. (I know...good luck.)  Rinse all of the bleach off the shirt and then toss it in the washing machine for a good wash.

Step 4:  Iron if needed.  Admire.

How cute are these shirts?  I love them and am so excited that all of the dads, grandpas, papaws and pop-pops in our family will have new gigantic mumus to sleep in.  :)

Oh, The Places You'll Go: DIY Balloon Invitations

Oh, how I love a good invitation.  I truly believe it sets the stage for your event.  A good invitation will let people know what to expect and will get them excited for your party!  Ironically, even though I design custom wedding invitations for my business, I rarely make invitations for my own parties.  I hate wasting the paper...LOL! (Freak!)  That said, I did enjoy putting these invites together for my daughter's preschool graduation. 

I shared some "Oh, The Places You'll Go" party inspiration in my last post, which included using real balloons for the invitations.  The invites were going to be given to the children at school to take home at the end of the day, so there were several ways to approach it...

1. The balloon is packaged in a box to float out when the box opens...invite is somehow integrated...it's the "shock and awe" of invites....totally cute, but boxes can get expensive and the extra packaging bothers me.

2. The invitation is rolled up and stuffed inside the balloon...which then needs to be popped to get the invite out. We'll call this the "audience participation" invite...super fun idea, but we're talking about asking 5 year-olds to pop their balloons...probably not gonna work.

3. The invitation is actually printed on the balloon, which is then presented either fully blown up or attached to a card for the guest to blow up upon receipt...another adorable variation of the "audience participation" invite if the guest has to blow it up...requires more lead-time and $$ for this approach.

So, what's a balloon-challenged designer to do?  After much deliberation, I went back to my retail roots and decided a layered hang-tag on the end of the balloon's string would be the way to go.  No need to pop the balloon and the invitation could still be snipped off and stuck in a scrapbook.  I combined the simplicity of a flat card with the drama of a helium balloon and tied it all together with a cute graphic.  Oh, and did I mention the transparencies??  (Yes, I actually had a box on-hand. Can you tell I used to be a scrapbooker??)  I loved the idea of having a see-through top layer with the invite peeking out from behind.

Here's how you do it...

Step 1: Scan an image that you like.  I chose an illustration from "Oh, The Places You'll Go" to go with the theme of the party.

STEP 2: Adjust your image as needed in a photo editing program.  I brightened my colors and cropped the image to a size that I liked.  My current go-to online photo editing program is PicMonkey. It is totally free and has tons of fun, simple tools...so easy a monkey could do it. ;)

STEP 3: Open a new word document and insert your image...squeezing it onto the page as many times as it will fit.  Mine were arranged four per page on an 8.5 x 11" sheet. (If you are a more advanced graphics person, feel free to use whatever program you like.  I just figured that everyone has a word program.)

STEP 4: Print your document on transparency paper per the manufacturer's directions.  You may need to reverse the image in your printer to have it print correctly.  (Consult your manual if you don't know how to do this - there is usually an option in your printer settings.)

STEP 5: Cut out your images.  I have an Exacto paper cutter with a laser beam that helps me line up my cuts exactly where I want them. (I know!  How cool is that??) If you don't have one of these, you can easily use scissors or a ruler and box cutter.

STEP 6: Create the text portion of your invitation in word by creating a text box the same size as your transparency image.  I found this great free Dr. Soos Font from FontSpace and used it to add authenticity to my design. When you've got the text formatted just the way you want it, copy the box as many times as you need to fill the page.  Then print on cardstock and cut out your cards.

STEP 7: To assemble your tags, you will need to stack the two layers and punch a hole in the top.  I found that my traditional hole punch would not punch through the transparency, so I used my trusty old scrapbooking "anywhere punch"...it worked perfectly. You could also use a nail or awl and hammer (or shoe, which is what I used with my punch!)

STEP 8: Add a ribbon tie and loop the balloon string through the back.  Trim any wild ends.
And, there you have it...super cool, custom invites that are sure to delight the 5-year-old in anyone.

Oh, The Places You'll Go: Graduation Party Inspiration

June already?  How is that possible?  My sweet baby girl is graduating from preschool in just two short weeks and preparations for the cutest preschool graduation party are well underway.  When her teacher asked for volunteers to organize, I was like this...Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me!  (Big surprise, right?)  So, I joined my first school "committee" with two other moms and we had a good time picking a venue (the community center) and planning a theme.

After tossing a few ideas around, we chose a theme based on Dr. Seuss' book, "Oh, The Places You'll Go".  I love this theme and can't think of anything more perfect for a preschool graduation. It's whimsical, timeless, inspiring and the colors are wonderful.  Game on!

The first thing I did was geek out on Pinterest for a few nights collecting ideas and inspiration.  In my fantasy party world, this is what I'd want the party to look like.  (I'll share what we actually put together in another post.)

 

COLORS:

Picking up the palette of the book's cover...shades of pink, tangerine, yellow, sage, aqua and lavender

INVITATIONS:

Balloon inspired...loving the idea of having a real balloon attached. 

DECORATIONS:

Picking up the tones and images from the book...balloons being a big focus.  The streamers, tissue poms and colorful tableware are perfectly whimsical and child-like.

FOOD:

Colorful, kid-friendly food with a sophisticated twist for the parents...thinking upscale veggie bar, rainbow pasta salad, sweet potato chips, flavored popcorn and of course, plenty of Seuss-like sweets including lots of swirls, sprinkles and maybe some cotton candy.



DRINKS:

For a large party, a help-yourself drink bar seems like the way to go.  Mason jar glasses with striped paper straws (my fav!) and drink flags to pick up the flag images in the book.  If I could find enough tiny elephants, they would totally be holding flags to identify things on the food tables!

 

DETAILS:

There are so many cute DIY projects out there that I'd love to try.  Here are a few that would enhance the overall look and feel of this party...custom cake plates, painted table cloths and fancy toothpicks and card holders.
